 Frank Robinson becomes the first African American manager in Major League Baseball on April 8. Robinson, who also played in the game, hit a home run.


 Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster film Jaws is released in theaters on June 20.


 Arthur Ashe defeats Jimmy Connors to become the first African American to win Wimbledon on July 5.


 The United States’ Apollo 18 rendezvous and docks with the Soviet Union’s Soyuz 19 on July 17.

 Saturday Night Live debuts on NBC on October 11.


 Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run becomes his first-ever Top 40 hit on October 11.


 The Edmund Fitzgerald sinks in Lake Superior on November 10.


 December 17 — Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme is sentenced to life for her assassination attempt on President Gerald R. Ford.
