Turner Completes Innovative, Net-Zero Energy Project at Chico State Chico State recently held the grand opening for its new Behavioral and Social Sciences Building, a 94,000-square-foot facility built by Turner Construction Company that sets a new benchmark for sustainable construction while fostering cutting-edge research, collaboration, and student success. Earning LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the building incorporates energy-efficient systems. As the first net-zero building on the Chico State campus, the building will generate more renewable energy than it consumes. Sustainable features include solar panels, LED lighting, a chilled beam cooling
system, native plants throughout the landscape, and a water-efficient infrastruc- ture. Eco-conscious materials were also used, including benches made from sustainably repurposed valley oak trees, reducing the project’s carbon footprint. Turner incorporated sustainable practices into the construction of the project
by using smart building technology to optimize temporary heating. By deploying sensors and transitioning to renewable diesel, Turner reduced carbon emissions, improved air quality, and minimized fuel consumption. Te team also diverted nearly 80 tons of clean drywall cutoffs from landfills
by separating and recycling the material during construction. Tese efforts lowered the environmental impact while increasing efficiency and cost savings on the project. “Tis project is a testament to our commitment to sustainability,” said Jim Hull
III, Turner’s Construction Executive. “From its net-zero design to its water-saving infrastructure, every element of this building was thoughtfully crafted to reduce environmental impact while providing an exceptional learning environment for students.” Te building’s modern amenities, state-of-the-art technology, and thought- fully planned interiors are designed to enhance the academic experience. Tis multifunctional hub is home to nine academic departments, a large 130-seat lecture hall, 22 classrooms, five laboratories, study and breakout areas, an indoor arboretum, and more.
