of the other tools. If I show them AI saves them X amount of time, guess what happens? They say ok, and this becomes more useful for them. In construction, safety is an area where I think AI could have a really huge im- pact. Taking in all the safety rules and regulations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and making them understandable for folks in the field is huge.


CALIFORNIA CONSTRUCTOR: What kind of changes can we expect for AI technology five or 10 years down the road?


JAMES SPELLOS: I’d be making a lot more money if I knew the answer to that! Tis year, one thing we’re going to see is more development of agentic AI (a


type of AI that can operate autonomous- ly, making decisions and performing tasks without human intervention). Tis is where people start to get a little bit creeped out and ask, “Where is my job in the future?” It’s a reasonable question. Te answer is your job is going to change like everybody else’s, and that’s why you need to know the technology so you can find where you slot into an organization most efficiently.


CALIFORNIA CONSTRUCTOR: What are the potential consequences for construction companies that choose not to use these newest tools or in- tegrate these technologies into their business models?


JAMES SPELLOS: Do you see any of those companies not using Excel right


now or not using Google or not using search engine optimization? Tey have all adopted those technologies when they came along, and will adopt this technol- ogy as well. But the ones that adopt and adapt quicker will have a head start and might be able to do a lot more. I see any company that doesn’t adopt AI as being left behind, just as they would with any other technology. However, it is magnified many times because the speed of change is so much quicker. Obviously, there are a many other elements to a great construction company other than using AI. But I believe every single person in the company will be impacted by AI. If they can figure out how to take advantage of it and use it properly while still having that personal approach to their customers, they will be a great company of the 2020s and the 2030s.
