oodservice workers, from line cooks to servers, and individuals in adjacent industries like
hospitality and retail, may experience a disproportionate number of mental health challenges. Demanding hours, irregular shifts and the constant pressure to meet customer demands with “smiles on their faces” can all take a toll on someone’s mental and emotional health. The problem is that the nation’s traditional support structure — those mental health professionals trained on how to help individuals deal with anxiety, depression and substance misuse — isn’t large or widespread enough to manage
