ASSOCIATION • From the OABA Chair Chair’s MESSAGE Ben Pickett , OABA Chair 2024 Safety First: Prioritizing Safety in the Outdoor Amusement Industry

Safety is not just a priority; it’s a fundamental value that guides every

aspect of our business. As the Chairman of the Board of the Outdoor Amusement Business Association (OABA), I’ve  industry to ensuring the safety of all patrons who enjoy our rides and attractions, furthermore the commitment to provide a safe workplace for all employees. In this article, I aim to underscore the paramount importance of safety, discuss its impacts, and highlight proactive measures taken to maintain the highest standards of safety. First and foremost, safety is non-negotiable. The well-being of our patrons, employees, and communities we serve is our top concern. Any incident, no matter how minor, can have far-reaching consequences, not only for the individuals involved but also for the reputation and viability of our entire industry. That’s why we must continuously strive for excellence in safety protocols, training, and oversight. The impacts of safety lapses within our industry can be

profound. Beyond the immediate physical harm to individuals, 

regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with inspection, maintenance, and operational standards.

• Industry Standards and Best Practices: OABA is represented at ASTM meetings annually. ASTM F-24 promotes industry-

wide safety standards and best practices. These guidelines cover everything from ride design and construction to maintenance procedures and operator training. We encourage everyone to become a member of ASTM and play an active role in the standards we have to comply with.

• Comprehensive Training Programs: Education and training are essential components of our safety strategy. OABA with

McGowan Allied Specialty Insurance who underwrites the VOLT program for ride operators, maintenance personnel, and other staff to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to operate rides safely and effectively, also offers the Active Shooter and Medical Response program which has had over 100 participants this year alone. More interesting, the VOLT program currently has over 700 active users. These programs are included with your OABA membership.

• Regular Inspections and Maintenance: Rigorous inspection and maintenance schedules primarily devised from the

manufacturer are followed to ensure the ongoing safety and integrity of amusement rides and attractions. Regular  maintenance practices, help identify and address potential issues before they escalate into safety concerns.

• Safety Culture: Safety is ingrained in the culture of our industry. From top management to frontline staff, safety

awareness and accountability should be emphasized at all levels of your company. We encourage open communication, reporting of safety concerns, and a continuous improvement mindset to enhance safety performance.
