FMCSA Alerts Carriers to Phishing Scams for Fake Safety Audits

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has issued

an alert for motor carriers to be wary of phishing scams. According to the agency, an email is being sent to registered entities by someone pretending to be FMCSA and notifying you that you need to schedule a safety audit. The link to request the safety audit has what appears to be a SAFER URL  PIN #, EIN #, and Social Security Number.  information (PII), but this information would also allow the unauthorized party to gain access to your FMCSA account. The email containing the link appears to be coming from FMCSA, but it is not. The FMCSA says that actual communications relating to

safety audits will typically come directly from an FMCSA dedicated mailbox, or from the entity within the State that has been assigned the responsibility to conduct the safety  encourages companies to verify any email or communication they feel to be suspicious with the appropriate agency or  the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends following  If you suspect your company has been victim of fraud or  of the Federal Trade Commission dedicated to reporting fraud cases at: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/.

Chances are good that an individual truck or bus will be inspected. Even trucks participating in a weigh station bypass program, like PrePass, will be subject to inspection. While the Roadcheck inspectors will look at all the safety and compliance areas for equipment and drivers with each inspection, this year there will be two focus areas. For drivers, inspectors will focus on the presence or use of controlled substances and alcohol. The Roadcheck inspections will look for physical and behavioral evidence of controlled substances and alcohol and include a query of the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. On the vehicle maintenance side, the 2024 Roadcheck will focus on tractor protection and anti-bleed back systems. A commercial motor vehicle’s tractor protection system consists of a tractor protection valve, trailer supply valve and anti-bleed back valve. All valves should be properly tested during a driver’s trip inspection and an inspector’s roadside inspection.
