4Breeding Doesn’t Cause Overpopulation:


Responsible Practices Reduce Shelter Strain


The idea that “every breeder puppy kills a shelter dog” is misleading. Only 5–25% of shelter dogs are recognizable purebreds; most overpopulation comes from unaltered mixes and irresponsible sources. Ethical breeders screen homes, take puppies back, and support breed-specific rescue, practices that actually reduce shelter crowding. Euthanasia rates have dropped sharply due to better spay/neuter outreach, not anti-breeder laws. Say it succinctly: “Responsible breeders screen homes and take pups back. Shows spotlight ethics and natural history of breeds, not excess.”

• Keep legal resources handy. AKC’s Government Relations team actively defends responsible breeding and opposes harmful bans
