PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I hope this newsletter finds you in good health and ready for 2024! Like many of you, I am still trying to figure out where 2023 went. I want to thank the Board of Directors and the membership for allowing me to serve in this role. I do not take the responsibilities of this position lightly as I consider it an honor to serve the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association. I plan to work diligently to fulfill our mission to promote, improve, and serve as an advocate for the veterinary profession in Kentucky.
Veterinary medicine is a hot topic both nationally and within our state with one area of particular interest addressing the challenge many of us have dealt with for many years: the shortage in our workforce. Tis shortage extends to all sectors of veterinary medicine with those in rural practice feeling the pinch the most. Many ideas and pro- posals have surfaced about what is the best solution to recruit and retain veterinarians in Kentucky. Te KVMA identified this need and has implemented several things to support the membership, including:
• Created student chapters at Auburn University, Lincoln Memorial University, and Tuskegee University to allow more direct and improved communication with our Kentucky veterinary students. A student/practice match program has been created at Auburn University CVM to specifically match Kentucky students with participating Kentucky practices for internships, externships, and preceptors.
• Worked along with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture under Com- missioner Dr. Ryan Quarles to publish a report from the Veterinary Shortage Working Group specifically relating to the Large and Food Animal Veteri- narian Shortage. Tis report helps identify and propose solutions to address shortages considering short and long-term goals.
• Collaboratively sponsoring a program along with Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and Kentucky Department of Agriculture to support students participating in the practice management clinical rotation. Tis
