PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (CONT.)

effort allows students to gain hands-on approach to business management. Under the supervision of faculty, students help identify key benchmarks in Kentucky’s rural practices to make them more sustainable, productive, and profitable.

• Supporting a collaborative program between Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association where 10 high school junior and senior students from rural areas in Kentucky are paired with 4th year veterinary students in a mentoring relationship. Selected students must have strong academic credentials, emotional maturity, motivation, and dedication.

Tis list only highlights a few of the efforts KVMA has made to address the shortage facing our profession and local communities. We continue to advocate for student opportunity in veterinary education. Our students must be well-positioned to achieve academic success while simultaneously cultivating the skills necessary to thrive when entering the workforce. Additionally, we must remain mindful of the national student debt crisis.

We must acknowledge that improving our workforce for years to come should be a collective effort. Frankly, we all play a critical role in addressing the veterinary shortage. I urge all of us to encourage young people in our towns and communities to consider veterinary medicine and expose them to our great profession. Indi- vidually and collectively, we should consider recruiting students who often-times shy away from veterinary medicine for a number of reasons. Our future colleagues are engaged in our local communities, participat- ing in church groups, 4-H and FFA clubs and youth sports. Moreover, they likely walk through the doors of our clinics every day observing our practices and forming their early impressions of veterinary medicine. Tese are the future veterinarians who have the best chance of returning to our practices where they have a personal connection and embrace our way of life. Let’s do our part to foster these connections and support the future of veterinary medicine for Kentucky.
