Play therapy in Asia provides a detailed description of play therapy frameworks and strategies adapted from Western culture. Play has been described as a universal and natural language for children. All authors supported the power of play and the effectiveness of play therapy on children’s positive changes and wellbeing. Yet, how play is interpreted and understood can vary across Asian cultures.

Cultural beliefs, attitudes, and expectations toward mental health services may impact the therapeutic process in play therapy. Therefore,       process, the toys, and the play materials used when working with children, adults, and their families from different Asian cultures, such as China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.

In each chapter, the authors presented how they designed and used play  

They also addressed how they engaged children and their families in the play therapy process to meet their needs. The case narratives include different theoretical approaches and recommended implications to provide readers an understanding of

cultural values, beliefs, communication styles, and challenges in Asian societies.

Readers will better understand play therapy development, training, and research in various Asian countries. Eric Green, Amie Myrick, and Jennifer Baggerly, three nationally recognized play therapy scholars from Johns Hopkins University and UNT, respectively, have assembled an international cadre of child experts to provide accessible, new interpretations of expressive arts, sandplay and play therapy with preteens. Each chapter closes with unvarnished, critical reflections of therapeutic failures and how those might lead to therapeutic success.
