Denis’ A. Thomas and Melanie H. Morris’ book is a three-part, comprehensive, beginner’s guide to incorporating creative play therapy with adults and adolescents. As an introduction the authors discuss the  power of play. In Part One readers will get a basic introduction to seven commonly used expressive arts including an overview of basic supplies. The authors establish person centered therapy as the grounding theory for the application of the therapeutic techniques outlined in the book and review developmental considerations.

In Part Two, they discuss the seven stages of creative play therapy. The authors consistently emphasize the therapist’s role in monitoring client overwhelm and assessing when clients need the therapist to move more toward the surface or more beneath the surface to facilitate healing in a 

well as examples of therapist client discussions and prompting to help   they are headed as they incorporate creative play therapy into their practice and plan treatment.

The authors offer insight to help therapists determine when clients are ready to move to the next stage or need to loop back to a previous stage. Throughout the book the authors encourage therapists to notice and trust their intuition during this process. Part Three briefly addresses special topics of client resistance, spirituality, and therapist self-care.
