Touch in Child Counseling and Play Therapy An Ethical and

Clinical Guide Authored by Janet Courtney, Ph.D., LCSW, RPT-S 2017: New York, NY: Routledge, ISBN: 978-1138638532

ouch in Child Counseling and Play Therapy: An Ethical and Clinical Guide is a practical book for today’s practitioners. Touch is too frequently viewed as something to avoid within the therapeutic context. Because of cases where appropriate touch boundaries were violated, protecting children has become a top priority. In our efforts to protect children, however, we may now be denying children the healing touches they need. Touch in Child Counseling and Play Therapy: An Ethical and Clinical Guide explores many of the ways in which touch can be ethically used within a clinical setting. The book gives specific guidance on how to work with children who have a history of trauma including what to do when a child touches a therapist inappropriately. In the hustle and bustle of the play room, touch is inevitable. There will be accidental touches such as bumping into each other, hand

touching while working together in the sand, child-initiated high-fives, etc. The reality of touch must be acknowledged; then ethical guidelines and competencies can be applied. When I first saw that this book was an “Ethical and Clinical Guide,” I assumed that it would be informative but perhaps not that entertaining to read. I was pleased to find that the book is filled with interesting vignettes, case studies, and rich examples that make the book engaging from start to finish.
