“I have some vivid memories of the first
time APT sponsored its own conference as opposed to co-sponsoring it with a university. When we made the decision, we had absolutely no idea how much work it would be. One example of this was the day and night we spent stuffing conference packets for attendees. We seriously underestimated how long it would take to stuff 1300 packets, so we had not made plans to order real food. Instead, we snacked on chocolate cake and coffee. The combination of highly repetitive work, sugar and caffeine made us all vacillate wildly between cranky and manic. As crazy as that night was... things actually got crazier once the conference started: stories for another time.”

“Being asked to choose my favorite is like asking parents to choose a favorite child. I have learned a lot, laughed a lot, and had some serious moments. My best memories are of conferences in which participants learn techniques which they can use immediately. Any conference in which I have been able to share practical, effective techniques is a memorable one. I truly believe that the APT conference really begins when it ends. It is then that therapists take the information learned out into the world. – Diane Frey, Ph.D., RPT-S
2008 LIFETIME AWARD
"I have lots of cherished memories related to APT, but my most favorite memory is the APT Conference in San Antonio in 1994. I volunteered the Center for Play Therapy at the University of North Texas to "run the show" which meant an extra heavy burden on Center for Play Therapy graduate assistants and volunteers that year. A Mariachi Band created a festive atmosphere for conference attendees as they entered the hotel lobby. That APT conference holds the record for the largest attendance." – Garry Landreth, Ed.D., LPC, RPT-S
2005 LIFETIME AWARD
“I've had so many good conference memories but I think the Keynote by JP Lilly and Janine Shelby in 2010 (Louisville) was the best. They were both so thought- ful and well-prepared. I remember feeling stimulated into deeper reflection and that doesn't always happen. I also remember dancing, wearing silly hats, and being hugged by hundreds of lovely, creative, and gentle souls!!!”

“How can I find a favorite? My many APT conferences have coalesced into a glow of memories of fun and laughter shared with groups of dedicated, playful people. Greeting old friends across ranks of escalators in huge hotels, sauntering together with new friends along the River Walk in San Antonio, sharing a meal at an outdoor restaurant in Sacramento, tossing balloons and feather into the air in unison with a whole ball room full of smiling people. These are some of my favorite things.” – Phyllis Booth, MA, LCPC, LMFT, RPT-S
