“My fondest Conference memory was: The first APT Conference held in NYC in 1982. It was the beginning of a dream come true for me – a gathering of clinicians passionate about Play Therapy!!!” – Charles E. Schaefer, Ph.D., RPT-S
2006 LIFETIME AWARD
“My favorite APT Conference memory is when I began attending, how thrilling it was for me to be able to meet so many play therapy authors that I had been reading! It was so exciting to not only see them in person, but to hear them teaching, and interact with them. Wow!”
2013 LIFETIME AWARD “My Clear Favourite Conference
memory is Vancouver, June 1990. We had it at University of BC in June. My Master's and Doctoral Students were a key part of the organizing and planning committees. We had a wine and cheese gathering in the book store, salmon BBQ at the Faculty Club and finally Dinner dance on a boat in the harbour. Even my two teenage daughters helped out! We had a board meeting at the Conference which I always enjoyed-both the board members and the stimulating discussions about organizing APT. The Conference was so successful that afterwards we developed a BC Play Therapy Association that is still strong and continues training and meeting today.” – John Allan, Ph.D.

“I don't have just one favorite memory, I have many... The conferences get better every year in terms of quality of presentation and meaningful participation of those attending. I can remember the early days when we could never quite be sure whether a presentation would be worthy or not. APT has come a long way!” – Louise Guerney, Ph.D., RPT-S
2006 LIFETIME AWARD
“At my very first APT conference in State College, PA, I went dancing with Kevin O'Connor, his husband, Bob, and Heidi Kaduson--I was awe-stricken that someone as important as Kevin (one of the co-founders of the whole organization) was kind enough to invite me to do something so fun with him and significant people in his life. I felt surprised to be included as an integral part of the process, and I had a wonderful time.” – Terry Kottman, Ph.D., LMHC, NCC, RPT-S
2014 LIFETIME AWARD
“In the fall of 1987, I had just made a decision to switch from TWU to UNT to pursue a master’s in secondary school counseling (at the age of 34). In early October, I saw a poster in the UNT student union building advertising a Play Therapy Conference featuring Charles Schaefer, Garry Landreth, and Kevin O’Connor to be held at UNT in a few weeks. I had never heard of play therapy or any of the speakers, but thought the topic sounded interesting. That conference literally changed my life (and my family), by the end of the day, I was sure that was what I wanted to do. The next day I changed my degree plan to the child counseling/play therapy tract and never looked back! All that I’ve learned and experienced as a result of that decision, including life-long friendships that I treasure, has enriched my life in ways I could never have imagined. I will forever be grateful to Garry, Charlie, and Kevin!”
