At August’s luncheon, Jeff and Dave ad- dressed gave a lively and practical A to Z run-down of the small claims court pro- cess. Jeff and Dave brought their unique blend of humor to the luncheon and were able to provide real advice for how to present a case in small claims court and what to expect. Tey even provided some special tips for actually filling out the small claims forms, without boring everyone on the filing requirements.


Notably, Jeff and Dave discussed some of the advantages and disadvantages of small claims court, and how suing in small claims court can set precedents in an association which could be damag- ing and without recourse in the future. On a related note, Jeff and Dave made sure to address whether small claims court is appropriate for certain types of lawsuits or disputes, which was helpful for all managers and Board members in attendance.


Perhaps the most useful advice provided by Jeff and Dave was the portion of the

presentation covering the actual prepa- ration for the small claims court hear- ing and attending the hearing. Because small claims court is handled differently as it relates to evidence and bringing witnesses, both speakers gave useful tips on how to set up an association for suc- cess by being adequately prepared in small claims court. Tis included tips on what types of documents/exhibit to print and bring, and how to best present them to the court in manner that will be efficient, relevant and understandable.


All of the tools, advice and informa- tion discussed by Jeff and Dave pro- vided the audience an insightful look at how to be prepared and ready for small claims court, no matter how knowl- edgeable the court may be with com- munity association issues. Because of Jeff and Dave’s lighthearted yet focused presentation, the August educational luncheon was one that no doubt left a lasting impression.
