income ratios than many of my peers, and unfortunately, owning their own practice right of school just isn’t an option for many. So although student debt was and still is a concern for my peers, those who are nearing graduation now—especially those in private institutions—are facing such a high level of debt that many are unsure that owning their own practice is even an option.

You’re serving on the ADA Council on Membership and on some subcom- mittees of it. Can you tell us some things that are going on at the ADA level that you are excited about, especially in terms of value to your new dentist colleagues? I just finished my first year on the Council of Membership, and it was very enlightening. I feel fortunate to work with an amazing and very diverse group of individuals, from across the country, who all are very passionate about membership. I am very excited about some of the things in the works that are very beneficial to my new dentist colleagues. One is the ADA Engagement Program, through which both constituent and component societies can develop programs or events to target student members, graduate students and new dentists to convert them to full membership within the tripartite. I am excited about this program because it is enabling our states and local societies to expand their touchpoints and show value in member- ship to these potential members, where they otherwise may not have been able to do so. Another thing I am excited about is the Find-A- Dentist online search. It seems so simple, but not every member has updated their profile. The stats are astonishing on it—in just the first few months since the ads launched, the traffic on the site rose from just 9,000 visits a month to more than 200,000! This tool is getting patients to member dentists and all it takes from our members is an updated profile to reap the benefits!

Of all activities you're participating in right now, what are you most excited about being a part of and why? This is an easy one for me. My most exciting and rewarding activity all around is being a mom to three unbelievable kids. I tell people all the time I am a mom first and every- thing else comes down the line after. My husband and I are doing the absolute best we can to raise our children to not only appreciate what they have, but to be respectful to all of those they come in contact with. Anyone who has kids knows it isn’t easy, and some days are more rewarding than others, but we will continue to teach our kids to be compassionate and to always try their best. It is the hardest job I think I will ever have, but at the end of the day, when I get the final kiss, hug and “I love you, mommy”, I know I am doing the best I can and that is all we can hope for as parents!

As you continue being a leader in organized dentistry, what is something you’d like to be involved in or see accomplished within the Association (at the local, state and/or national level) that you feel could really be of value to new dentists? I would love to see a leadership development track for new dentists. We are fortunate in our state to have many very active and engaged new dentists, but one thing I worry about is that we aren’t fostering that passion enough. It wasn’t hard for me to be involved because I knew so many very active members and nearly every tripartite staff member within the state; however, so many of my colleagues come out without any exposure to leadership opportuni- ties at all, and it can be very intimidating to get your foot in the door. I know these individuals have wonderful things to offer to our associa- tion, and I would love to see these new dentists more active across the state and ultimately at the Sixth District and national level.

Tell us your favorite hobby/pastime, food, travel destination, book and movie. Hobby/Pastime: Anyone who really knows me knows that my family and I spend every possible moment we can on the water, so if the weather is nice you will find us boating at the lake! With a very close second of sports of any kind—I love my Cardinals and of course enjoy more than anything watching my kids play in their games. Food: French fries or ice cream. Travel destination: At this point in my life, it is for sure our house at the lake! Book: To Kill a Mockingbird. Movie: The Shawshank Redemption.

In closing … I would like to give a big thank you to the GSLDS for nominating me for this distinguished award and to the MDA Board for selecting me as the recipient. I am beyond grateful and honored to be recognized for my commitment to organized dentistry. I am very passionate about our profession, and I know there are great things that lie ahead. Our future is bright because our new dentists are strong, especially in our state. I know there are many, many others out there who are just as deserving of this award, so I truly appreciate the recog- nition. I would also like to thank my family for their continued support; it is only because of them that I am able to offer my time to the profes- sion. Again, I am very humbled and honored.

Distinguished Service Dr. Charles McGinty

The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a member with a long history of exemplary service and dedication to the dental profession and organized dentistry.

Dr. McGinty’s commitment and dedication to the dental profession and organized dentistry is evidenced by his service in a number of roles in his 41 years of membership. He has served his local Southwest Dental Society as president and as its Trustee to the MDA Board. He has been the MDA Speaker of the House of Delegates and was President in 2006. He has served on the Missouri Dental Insurance Services Board of Directors and the MDA Foundation Board, for which he was Chair.

Perhaps, however, Dr. McGinty’s greatest service shines through his commitment to political advocacy on behalf of the dental profession. He served on the MODentPAC Board of Directors and as its Chair and has represented Missouri extensively at the national level of the American Dental Association. He served on the ADPAC Board in vari- ous capacities and was Chair in 2015. This past April he was honored with the Jack Wilson Award—named for the dentist who created AD- PAC in 1969—presented to recognize outstanding service to ADPAC and Congressional political activity on behalf of organized dentistry. His leadership extends to his community where he served on the Joplin R-8 School Board and Missouri Southern State University Board of Governors. His volunteerism includes work with the Salvation Army, Joplin Chamber of Commerce, local churches and other charities.

Dr. McGinty received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1977 and his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of Missouri-Rolla in 1973. He continues to practice at Associates of Dentistry, located at 410 South Pearl Avenue in Joplin. He and his wife, Donna, have four chil- dren and seven grandchildren.
