2017MDA House of Delegates Recap

The following are summaries of resolutions from the 2017 MDA House of Delegates. For complete resolution language, visit modental.org/house. Ad- ditionally, the MDA has online a House Resolutions Status page listing each of the previous three year’s adopted resolutions with a corresponding note on the status of each, which is updated every six months. Find it at modental.org/housestatus.

T

he first three resolutions of each MDA House of Delegates deal with related administrative items, includ- ing approving the agendas for the House; ap- proving any revisions to the House manual; approving the previous House years’ minutes.

MDA members elected delegates and alter- nates to the 2018 ADA House of Delegates were: (Delegates) Drs. Robert Butler (SL); Cheryl Haley (SP); Michael Patterson (SW); Prabu Raman (KC); Theodore Rechtin (SL); Lori Roseman (SL); and Robert Tait (KC) and (Alternates): Drs. Mary Burke (SL); Jonathan Edwards (SE); Amanda Fitzpatrick (NE); Marsha Pyle (KC); Vincent Rapini (SL); Joseph Sokolowski (SL); and, Connie White (KC).

MDA members elected Action Team Lead- ers for the 2018 ADA Dentist and Student Lobby Day (formerly Washington Leadership Conference) were: Drs. Theodore Rechtin (SL); Robert Butler (SL); Elwood Rice (C); Erick Jansson (C); Robert Tait (KC); Cheryl Haley (SP); Eric Tolliver (SP); Jonathan Edwards (SE); Lynne Barbour (NE); and, Jon Copeland (SL).

The 2018 dues will be $452 for Active Mem- bers, which is no dues increase. However, a resolution passed that changed the Active Life dues amount from 50 percent of the Ac- tive member rate to 75 percent (lessening the discount by 25 percent).

MDA Bylaws were amended to update the qualifications for Affiliate Member (dentist who is a member in good standing of any constituent society of the ADA, other than the MDA) and Associate Member (dental team member working for an MDA member dentist or a lab technician currently working with/for an MDA member dentist) so an af- filiate application no longer needs executive director approval and an associate applica- tion no longer needs dentist sponsorship.

MDA OFFICERS were installed by Dr. Roy Thompson, Sixth District Trustee from Tennessee. From left, Dr. Thompson; Speaker, Dr. Tom Stone; President, Dr. Vince Rapini; Treasurer, Dr. Ron Wilkerson; and, President-Elect, Dr. Dan Kessler.

Both changes will ease application for MDA membership in these two categories.

Work from the MDA Legislative and Regulatory Committee (LRC) was indicated in two approved resolutions. The first asked the LRC to review language of any proposed legislation regarding a Dental Faculty Teaching Permit that would credential faculty who have a certificate from a CODA- accredited dental specialty program or a valid license from another state or US territory solely for the purpose of teaching at only the primary clinical facility of a CODA-accred- ited dental program in Missouri, and if it is determined to be comparable to language proposed in the 2017 legislative session sup- ported by the Missouri Dental Board, for the LRC to recommend to the Board of Trustees support of said legislation.

The second asked the LRC to research existing legislation in other states that addresses: any willing provider, insurance portability, freedom of choice, assignment of benefits, and imaging requirements for routine care. The LRC then is asked to report to the Board of Trustees with recommendations to draft or support similar

TWO NEW MDA BOARD MEMBERS started their terms at the November 5 meeting. Dr. Michael Patterson, Joplin, replaces Dr. Michael LaFerla as Southwest Dental Society Trustee and will serve a four-year term. Dr. Mack Taylor, Bernie, replaces Dr. Megan Lenahan as New Dentist Com- mittee representative and will serve a two-year term.

language, should it determine that doing so would further the MDA’s mission of helping all members succeed.

Similar to a 2017 ADA resolution that ad- dressed Do-It-Yourself Teeth Straighten- ing, the MDA House asked the MDA Board to request the Missouri Dental Board to determine if the licensed dentists in Missouri involved in direct-to-consumer orthodontic therapies are providing treatment in compli- ance with appropriate Statutes and Rules. f
