Dear Dr. Brunker, What’s the big deal? I’ll tell ya the big deal!
First the facts: A dental anesthesiology firm from St. Louis printed the following words in their September 2010 Newsletter: “We Have Reached the Western Border! From St. Louis to Kansas City, our dental anesthesiology firm is now Missouri’s sole provider of in-office dental deep sedation/ general anesthesia.”
your view
Well that just isn’t so, and a phone call was made to their media relations person to inform them that they are NOT the sole providers of in-office deep sedation/general anesthesia in the state of Missouri. A request was made to print a correction to their newsletter statement.
So, the following words were printed in their October 2010 newsletter: “What’s the Big Deal? Last month we wrote, ‘From St. Louis to Kansas City, our dental anesthesiology firm is now Missouri’s sole provider of in-office dental deep sedation/general anesthesia. We unintentionally did not finish the sentence. It should have read: From St. Louis to Kansas City, our dental anesthesiology firm is now Missouri’s sole provider of in-office dental deep sedation/general anesthesia by board certified anesthesiologists.’”

Um, I don’t think so. The big deal is that some Missouri dentists have completed post-graduate anesthesia training, and possess a Deep Sedation/General Anesthesia Permit issued by the Missouri Dental Board. Some provide anesthesia within their offices, and some provide in-office dental deep sedation/general anesthesia, so their initial statement just isn’t so!
research briefs
The big deal is that physicians have a Missouri Board of Healing Arts, Missouri Physician Licensure Statute, Chapter 334.100. (4) (q) which states: Advertising by an applicant or licensee which is false or misleading, or which violates any rule of the board, or which claims without substantiation the positive cure of any disease, or professional superiority to or greater skill than that possessed by any other physician. An applicant or licensee shall also be in violation of this provision if the applicant or licensee has a financial interest in any organization, corporation or association which issues or conducts such advertising;
We dentists have a similar Missouri Dental Board rule, (20 CSR 2110-2.110 Addressing the Public— Dentists) (3) which states: A duly registered and currently licensed dentist shall not use or participate in the use of any advertising containing a false, fraudulent, misleading, deceptive or unfair statement or claim.
The original sentence mailed to Missouri dentists is misleading and unfair to Missouri dentists providing anesthesia services. Because Missouri is known as the Show-Me State, shouldn’t we have been shown the whole sentence? You know, dentistry has a long history of providing patients an- esthesia and comfort. Do the names Horace Wells and William Thomas Greene Morton ring a bell?
And that’s the Big Deal! Oh, and by the way, what is a Certified Nurse? Allan Schwartz, DDS, CRNA, St. Louis, Mo. (Baylor College of Dentistry ‘80)
