Sharing the MOM experience M
OM projects are very instrumental in bringing your members together in a very deep, warm, satisfying and heart-warming event. The abilities that we have as
dentists, hygienists, assistants and community workers are given to the community at large, and it is very satisfying. It is an opportunity for dentistry to “shine” and let the public know who we really are and how big our hearts are. It also involves the community and exposes the great need that is not being met. I encourage your membership is to view the videos from ADCF that are on CDs. A picture is worth a thousand words and the videos capture the events very well. Good luck! In the dental family it has been great to reunite with former classmates and colleagues of dentists, hygienists and assistants from around the state during the event. It can only make our association stronger to have this united relationship. Dr. Tamara Berg (2011 OkMOM Chair & ODA President)

Because this is the fi rst MOM Project in Missouri, in an eff ort to educate MDA members, we asked other states that have experienced the event their thoughts/testimonials about it.
am very excited for you and your state! The In Wisconsin we like to say “It’s the smiles, not the miles, that make it a mission” because we haven’t had to travel out
of the country to fi nd people who need our help to get them out of pain and bring a smile to their face. In the time span of a long weekend we see thousands of smiles on the faces of volunteers and patients alike—some of those patients admittedly haven’t smiled in years. Those smiles and hugs are all the payment needed to keep a MOM volunteer coming back year after year. Our members appreciate the opportunity to volunteer in such a large project outside of their offi ce, side by side with their staff and colleagues. The Association benefi ts in three aspects: From media attention to the reasons that MOM Is needed and highlighting the charity care that dentists do; from legislators touring a MOM event and seeing fi rsthand the very real need that their constituents and many others have because government programs aren’t adequately funded; and, from a membership perspective the bond that forms between members and the association by us working together in such a gratifying way, helping them reach self-actualization. The community benefi ts from the improved health of those who have been treated and are now able to work a full day or sit through a full day of school without tooth pain and the increased sense of community that occurs when so many come together from so many diff erent walks of life to help out their neighbors in need. Companies who donate either in kind or cash to the program and the volunteers who participate appreciate being able to be a part of something so big. No matter the skill level, there is a job for anyone who wants to volunteer. Patients are so appreciative of the care they have received that they will become volunteers the next day or the next mission. Lani Becker (MOM Project Coordinator, Wisconsin Dental Association)
