Dr. Nathan Bauer, Springfi eld is the 2010 MDA Out- standing New Dental Leader.

This award is designed to recognize a mem- ber of the MDA who has been in practice for 10 years or fewer and who has demonstrated outstanding leader- ship qualities, professional and ethical conduct, and volunteer activities in the community and organized dentistry.

Since returning to Springfi eld after graduat- ing from dental school, Dr. Bauer has become increasingly active in organized dentistry. At the local level, he has been involved with the Greater Springfi eld Dental Society in many ways, including as a Board Member, as chair of the Children’s Dental Health Commission and on the planning committee of the Greater Springfi eld Dental Society Foundation Auction. As a Greater Springfi eld PAC Board Member, he participated with phone tree calls for candidate donations and helped set up a fundraiser for a congressional candidate.

At the MDA, Dr. Bauer has been a delegate for Greater Springfi eld and is on a House of Delegates Reference Committee. He regularly participates in MDA Legislative Days and cur- rently serves as a Board Member of MDIS.

Dr. Bauer has represented the Greater Spring- fi eld Dental Society and the MDA at the na- tional level by serving as an Action Team Leader for the past two years at the ADA Washington Leadership Conference. Dr. Bauer also authored a resolution that was submitted to the 2009 ADA House of Delegates calling for the ADA to encourage the FDA to require warning labels for medications that cause dry mouth and a resultant increased risk of tooth decay and other potential complications. The resolution was referred to the Council on Scientifi c Affairs in 2009 and was ultimately passed at the 2010 ADA House of Delegates meeting.

When asked what dental-related activities were most near and dear to him, Dr. Bauer said, “Leg- islative days, both in Jefferson City and at the Washington Leadership Conference. I think the legislative efforts of the MDA and ADA are per- haps the most important thing our Associations do, both for the public, and for our profession.”

Dr. Bauer is highly regarded among his peers and is the perfect example of an Outstanding New Dental Leader. Dr. Bauer has a general practice in Springfi eld and is a 2005 graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

PRESIDENTIAL CITATION AWARD

Dr. Jerry Cash, Springfi eld, received a 2010 Presidential Citation Award.

The President of the MDA has the distinct honor of bestowing Presidential Citation Awards. Dr. Jerry Cash was honored for his dedication to the dental profession and his outstanding contributions to organized dentistry.

Dr. Cash has been in practice for more than 35 years. Throughout his career, he has been a cham- pion for dental education, for organized dentistry and the dental profession.

This is evidenced not only through his detailed service to organized dentistry at all levels, but as well, through his service on advisory boards for colleges in the Springfi eld area, in his efforts to develop and chair various dental study clubs, and in his current service as a member of the Missouri 100, an advisory group to the President of the University of Missouri.

However, Dr. Cash was recognized with a Presidential Citation specifi cally for his work as a member of the Search Committee for the New Dean of UMKC School of Dentistry. Dr. Cash’ ef- forts to ensure that the right person was selected for this position was crucial and will affect the dental profession and organized dentistry for years to come.

Dr. Cash was commended for the inordinate amount of time and energy he spent serving on the Search Committee. Along with many meetings, this also involved personally reviewing each candidate’s resume and ranking via a point system. He and the committee strongly advo- cated for the position to be fi lled by a Doctor of Dental Surgery rather than a Doctor of Educa- tion.

Dr. Cash is an orthodontist in Springfi eld and is a 1972 graduate of the University of Missouri- Kansas City.

LEGISLATIVE EXCELLENCE AWARD

Two Legislative Excellence awards were given during the banquet to Senator Brad Lager and Representative Chris Molendorp. Both awards recognized these legislators’ efforts on the MDA Capped Fees legislation.

Senator Brad Lager represents 16 counties throughout North- west Missouri. During the 2010 Legislative Session, Senator Lager led our Senate efforts to prohibit capped fees on non-covered services. During fl oor debate, Senator Lager successfully amended House Bill 2205 with language that would pro- hibit the unfair insurance practice.

Representative Chris Molendorp represents part of Cass County in the Missouri House of Representatives. He was elected to the Missouri House in 2008, and was recently re-elected to his second term. Although he has only served one term in the legislature, Rep. Molendorp has already shown strong advocacy for MDAs issues. Rep. Molendorp led MDA capped fees efforts in the House. In addition to fi ling House Bill 1620, to prohibit capped fees, he also successfully fought to have that language amended onto SB 842 dur- ing House debate.

While Capped Fees legislation ultimately did not make it to the Governor’s desk, the MDA recognizes both Senator Lager and Representative Molendorp for their efforts to protect our profes- sion from insurance interference.
