Not
Enough Cooks in the Kitchen
By Erica Horndasch, CMCA, AMS, Vice President of Business Development at Associa Chicagoland
I get asked a lot of questions when meeting with association boards and I wish I had the magic recipe for recruiting new volunteers in community associations. When you think of your association, or any association, what comes to mind? Are your interactions or experiences negative or positive? In my experience, I find that most associations focus completely on the business of the association, but often forget about the social needs. I truly believe that the social needs are just as important to truly develop and build a sense of community. In order to get more people involved, it’s essential to find ways within your community to engage them, and engagement requires positive interaction.

If all you’re doing is the normal day-to-day operations, that’s not very exciting to most. So, what would be exciting to you?
2022 is right around the corner and most associations are in the process of, or just finished, creating budgets and laying out their plans for next year. Do you have anything budgeted for fun stuff? You don’t have to be an active adult community to offer some level of social activities or events in your community. Do you have an annual meeting coming up? Have you ever considered making it more than a meeting? Do you have residents in the community that like to entertain or plan events? Why not ask them to help you set up a networking hour before or after the annual meeting to attract more participation?
