ingredients together. A management team will assist in providing education to homeowners, offering avenues in which homeowners can share ideas or voice concerns and find solutions to problems. Vendors also assist in educating homeowners and board members, and usually become part of the solutions. In addition to education, your management partner and vendors are there to guide and season the association to its most delicious and savory flavor!

You will want to fold in your ingredients. Each ingredient should be handled with care. Aggressively mixing or beating ingredients often creates stiffness and may leave you with more of a concrete mixture than a savory warm comfort food. This is a recipe that takes time and may need adjustments along the way. Each year the recipe may change slightly – THAT IS THE BEST PART! While in theory the blend is thesame, eachnewingredientintroducedbringsfresh experiences and new ideas.

That leaves us with the secret ingredient. I can’t believe I am going to give the secret ingredient away, but here we go… Mom’s secret ingredient was “love.” At the time, I didn’t get it. I’m sure upon hearing her response I provided an eye roll. In looking back, I do see it. She took time to figure out who was going to be at that table, what they needed, and what they liked. Granted, we can’t give every homeowner everything they want, or what they would like, but if we took that concept and made our secret ingredient a blend of respect, patience, empathy, and willingness to serve for the benefit of all, we would be serving up a quality dish every time.

When it came time to eat, we didn’t eat off fancy print china plates. Our plates were simple. The table would be set with everything we would need. The casserole was the main event. It didn’t need any fanfare. It stood on its own. At the end of that meal, each one of us full. Nothing went to waste. Each of us content and leaving the table with a sense of having been cared for, a distinct feeling of comfort.

We have that same opportunity when serving our Community Casserole. Our meetings are the table in which we serve up our Community Casserole. The preparation of the perfect recipe is the recruiting of homeowners willing to serve. Then, the proper vendors are folded in. The wide variety of ingredients meld together, each bringing their own unique “flavor” to our Community Casserole. We take the time to make sure each ingredient is ready by providing guidance, education, and open communication. Once all mixed together and heated to perfection, it is served up at the next meeting. The community comes together just as a family would to share in that satisfying meal. At the end of the meetings in which a Community Casserole is served, we too should be leaving full. Homeowners and board members alike should be feeling satisfied as they will have the sense of being taken care of and comforted. As managers, we can also leave with contentment in knowing that we served up a perfect dish. One so good, it keeps them wanting more and looking forward to that next serving. Bon appetite!
