Just like both golf courses above are different, community association landscapes are different. It’s rare to run across any two community associations that require the same exact landscape management program. Some communities are independent, and some are part of a master association that may include multiple individual associations. Community associations may benefit most from unique service packages that best meet the horticultural and financial needs of their landscapes and boards.
On a parkland style golf course, I am most likely pull my driver to tee off, yet on a link style course I may have to play the bend, or wind, and pull an iron at the tee. Some associations prefer extremely manicured shrubbery, where other boards may want a more natural feel for plantings. Some associations are looking for landscape management plans heavy on sustainable practices or maybe native plantings areas. Other associations desire bountiful seasonal color displays changed out four to five times a calendar year. Sometimes the physical location, soil type and scale of the property drives the type of landscape created and necessary landscape management program.
Many of us remember Tiger Woods’ iconic caddy Mike “Fluff” Cowan, a free spirited fuzzy mustached, lively middle aged professional caddy. More recently Joe LaCava was Woods’ caddy. Joe can appear a bit robotic inside the ropes and is younger than the aforementioned “Fluff.” Both caddies helped Woods to multiple Major Championships. Each skilled landscape contractor may have a different opinion on how to best manage different landscapes. If you have a grub problem, some professionals may want to use an early spring preventative application while others recommend a mid-summer corrective treatment. Both are viable options and should be considered if you have a grub issue. Most landscape contractors are going to encourage you to core aerate your groomed turf. Depending upon your needs, some will suggest mechanical core aeration in the spring or fall while others may suggest a chemical aerator otherwise known as a soil conditioner. Each is a valid practice depending upon your individual property conditions and your overall landscape goals.
With many golf outings in the near future, I hope you hit them long and straight. Keep your ball in the short grass, although the rough is still better than a day at work. If not, keep your head down when you swing, shout “fore” loudly and proudly. Mostly, don’t forget to compliment me on my new black and white gingham, hot pink saddle, custom Foot Joys.
