Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) one month before his fifth birthday, Keystone CAI’s Michael Shaw, Manager for Communications & Programs, has been taking insulin shots every day for thirty-nine years. According to the Centers for Disease Control ’s (CDC) National Diabetes Statistics Report, published in the year 2020, Michael is one of an estimated 1.6 million Americans living with T1D. Globally, IDF Diabetes Atlas reported a staggering 463 million people age 20 and up and an additional 1.1 million adolescents and children have T1D as of 2019. Even more troubling is that cases of T1D are surging at a meteoric pace. In the past twenty years, the number of adults living with T1D has more than tripled. There is no cure for T1D.

According to JDRF, formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the leading global organization funding T1D research, advocacy, and the search for a cure, “T1D is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that controls blood-sugar levels. The cause of this attack is still being researched, however scientists believe the cause may have genetic and environmental components.” Complications of T1D can include renal failure, blindness, limb amputation, infertility, and death. T1D is consistently one of the leading causes of death in the United States.

Early in 2021, Keystone CAI’s board of directors chose JDRF as its charity partner for the year. Shortly afterwards, a group of volunteers involved with Keystone CAI decided to unite their energy and resources to create an event to benefit JDRF and Score for the Cure was born.

Score for the Cure will take place on August 14, 2021 at Revolution Ice Gardens in Warminster, PA. The event features hockey tournaments for ages 13-34 and
