“I stay in the construction industry because I love it. Everyone is impacted by construction, whether it’s the roads we drive on, the houses we live in, or the buildings we work in.”

really enjoy showing new people new ways to approach things that they didn’t know about before,” he commented. When he learned that there was an op- portunity to help AGC of California bolster its professional learning platform, Long agreed to teach a series on Microsoft Excel in 2021 and added construction accounting courses to his repertoire shortly after. Tey include “Construction Accounting: Elements of the WIP (Work in Progress),” “Construction Accounting: WIP Analysis,” and a “Microsoft Excel Virtual Training Series.” (See sidebar for upcoming courses.) So what does Long like best about teaching? “It invigorates me,” he com- mented. “I love that ‘aha’ moment when people recognize ‘this is going to save me so much time!’ or ‘that’s so easy!’” His Microsoft Excel virtual training

series is an 8-part course designed for those looking to take their Excel skills to the next level, introducing time-saving skills and ways that users can better utilize Excel for analysis and reporting. “Excel is something that a lot of us use, and if there is a tip or trick I have discovered that helped me and I can pass that along to somebody, it just feels great,” he added. While he didn’t initially plan to work

in construction financial accounting, Long said he wouldn’t trade it now. “I stay in the construction industry because I love it,” he said. “Everyone is impacted by construction, whether it’s the roads we drive on, the houses we live in, or the buildings we work in.” He noted that construction is such

a huge industry and “we kind of speak our own language.” His “Construction Accounting: Elements of WIP” classes, for example, explore the work in progress (WIP) or job schedule, which is at the heart of financial accounting for con- struction companies. Participants learn about key elements of the WIP report and how they relate to each other as well as how the percent complete method of revenue recognition works. Te WIP Analysis course takes a deep-

er dive into WIP to help construction financial managers know what to look for on a WIP report. “Te percentage of completion meth- od can be confusing, so I tried to come up with a way to break it down and make it simple,” Long said. “I try to apply what I’ve learned from my career in identifying problems jobs have had in the past and then share (the lessons learned) with other people.”
