Investing in Our Future Workforce

for what AGC has done for our industry and for my business, especially throughout the pandemic. I’m particularly proud of our mutual work to advance our industry, particularly when it comes to our workforce. From the launch of our Emerging

A

Leaders program and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Steering Committee and its important recom- mendations, to an expanded Training and Education program and new Build California e-cademy, AGC and the AGC Construction Education Foundation have had a record-setting year. Tey have gone above and beyond to help us build our best teams, providing us more tools and resources than ever to help us build the diverse, inclusive, safe culture we need to attract and retain our desired workforce, as well expand our current knowledge and capacity to remain competitive. For example, since its launch two

years ago, Build California has reached 7.5 million Californians through a robust mix of outreach and programmatic efforts, both in-person and virtually, with important messaging designed to inspire, engage, and activate the next generation of construction workers. Trough our Training and Education

program, we trained more than 2,000 people in the first half of this year alone. Also, our Construction Leadership Council, which was established to help develop the next generation of industry leaders, voted to rename itself to the AGC Emerging Leaders to create clarity around the program’s role and launch more robust offerings. I encourage all young leaders to learn more about the work they are doing and engage in the program to help you reach your career goals and build a better, brighter future for California. 4 September/October 2021

s my term as your AGC president nears its conclusion, I’ve been reflecting on how grateful I am

Our DEI Steering Committee has

published, and your State Board adopted, thoughtful and progressive recommenda- tions for every member and the industry at large. Please take some time to read, understand, and adopt these valuable guidelines at your company. You’ll find your company will become a better place for all to work and thrive! Lastly, in the spirit of getting

involved, I am excited to announce that #CONSTRUCT2021 returns this year in-person! Our annual fall conference is one of my favorites and is an opportunity for all levels of industry professionals to build their capacity and networks so you can do what you do best: construct a legacy. At the event, I encourage you to

take advantage of this opportunity to reconnect and learn with leaders across the state at our business meetings, as well as participate in the Student Job Fair as an exhibitor so that you can get your company in front of eager up-and-coming talent hungry for opportunity. AGC members build the foundation

of California’s success — our infra- structure, our workplaces, our community assets, and our living spaces. I am grateful to you for your contribution in building a stronger California; every day we get to build a legacy that will outlast our careers, and it’s not just the built environment I’m speaking about — it’s the lives and careers of those we hire, train and mentor. As you read these next pages, celebrate the successes we’ve had in building our future workforce, and recommit yourself to finding new ways to keep building on these successes! Kindest regards,

Mike Blach, President AGC of California
