Galápagos Islands Galápagos Islands Zachary Chaves R
ecent restrictions on tourism have made the Galápagos Islands a mycologically curious destination.
I visited there in April, the end of the rainy season, and couldn’t have been more pleased with what we found. Before going I was warned. Many
naturalists tend to specialize in what their clients expect to see: largely birds and reptiles. Furthermore, I was warned
of “checklisters,” a pejorative referring to the competitive sport of claiming that you have seen a certain specimen of a species group, then to quickly find as many others as you can. Not here. As of late, tourism has dissipated down to a hundredth of what is used to be and with less revenue some areas are not being groomed. What a time for saprobic fungi and their admirers! Te local laws require you to have a naturalist guide wherever you go and
we were lucky to find one enthusiastic about fungi: Erika Arias Valverde at El Chato Ranch Tortoise Reserve. Erika is a naturalist with a keen interest who enthusiastically led me directly to some of this reserve’s finest specimens, albeit many had already passed their prime. How fortunate we were to find lively specimens then on tortoise dung. Larry Millman diagnosed these for us as Coprinellus tortensus.
