COMMUNITY RELATIONS The Ties That Bind: Building Strong
Community Relationships Partnerships with community groups help this district serve students as well as local citizens.

ighway 30 runs 57 miles, from downtown St. Louis to St. Clair, Missouri. In the Northwest R-1 School District, located along a 21-mile stretch south of the St. Louis metropolitan
area, we have a saying, “We are the tie that binds the Highway 30 corridor.”
The district comprises approximately 102 square miles, with few municipal governments located within
the district boundaries. Northwest R-1, like many dis- tricts, provides community centers and libraries and engages the community to support local government. School districts like Northwest R-1 often serve as the cornerstone of the entire community. That makes sense considering that many districts’ budgets are driven by local taxes, which are in turn driven by annual property assessments.
The Northwest R-1 School District submitted a community survey in order to develop an understanding of how the community felt about the district. District administrators compared the survey data from the community with the survey data submitted by Northwest R-1 staff.
