VEBA Offers Modern Diabetes Management, at No Cost to Members By Joyce Kennedy, Manager of Insurance Services
Many Missourians’ health is affected by diabetes.Te American Diabetes Association reports approximately 546,090 people in Missouri — 11.4% of the adult population — have diagnosed diabetes. Teir medical expenses are approximately 2.3 times higher than those who do not have diabetes — diagnosed diabetes costs an estimated $6.7 billion in Missouri each year.
MBA VEBA continually looks for programs that seek to help individuals maintain and improve their health. MBA VEBA added a new health benefit this year for its participating medical plan members to assist them in managing their diabetes — the Livongo for Diabetes Program.
Tis diabetes management program is for those with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. It assists individuals with blood glucose control via a connected blood glucose meter, coaching and member support. Livongo provides individuals with a personalized experience that helps them understand their blood sugar; develop sustainable, healthy, lifestyle habits; and improve glycemic control.
Participation in the program is voluntary, and the program is offered at no additional cost to eligible members and/or their covered dependents with diabetes. Once enrolled, individuals receive a blood glucose meter, strips and lancets from Livongo and access to
my.livongo.com and may begin testing.
• More Tan a Standard Meter — Te Livongo meter is connected and provides real-time tips and automatically uploads member blood glucose readings online, making logbooks a thing of the past. A diabetes specialist has real-time access to readings and may contact individuals concerning any acute out-of-range blood glucose readings. Individuals may access their blood glucose readings, reorder strips, contact a coach or share their health report directly from their blood glucose meters. Alternatively, they also may log into into their accounts, on the Livongo mobile app or contact Livongo member support.
• Unlimited Strips at No Additional Cost — Individuals can get as many strips and lancets as needed, with no hidden costs. When your supplies are about to run out, Livongo ships more right to your door.
• Coaching Anytime and Anywhere — Livongo coaches are certified diabetes educators who are available anytime via phone, text and a mobile app to give members guidance on their nutrition and lifestyle questions.
