FEEDING THE SPIRIT
Acts 2 closes with a community in unity (verses 42-47) and mentions that believers continue to share table fellowship regardless of cultural differences.
Today, to break bread in diversity requires us to value ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity as tongues of fire. My participation in the International Youth Advisory Body for the Dicastery of Laity and Family Life has helped me realize that being ONE Church requires patience. Twenty of us young people from all over the world form this committee. Te first year, we felt like we did not advance in projects because we had to communicate in multiple languages with interpretation. Nonetheless, what we saw at first as chaos and language barriers became lessons of bridge-building and valorizing each member’s gifts regardless of language. Tis committee has taught me that, in a diverse Church, moving forward is sometimes moving backward or not moving at all, and that unity does not mean uniformity. Our Church is a constant Pentecost of tongues of fire reaching out to the world. We as disciples need to speak to the heart of the people through liturgy, music, symbols, and rituals that transmit the salvific message. If Jesus is our Lord, then all of His people are our brothers and sisters.
