ONA Highlights from Florida Presbytery Wes Spring, ONA Board Member
Florida Presbytery is continuing to grow both by planting new churches and seeking acquisition with several other
Scott Smith was ordained on Sunday, May 16. Scott and his wife Amy will be
- try since their college days. Scott previously planted a church with the Southern Baptists and Amy was on staff for many years with CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ). While in Lake Placid, they were instrumental in the early planting of Igle- sia En Movimiento, “Church on the Move,” with Tim and Barbara Sewell. Scott served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Lake Placid and on provisional sessions for Tim Sewell and Justin Westmoreland in Oklahoma. He is also serv- ing on the World Witness board. Amy has led women’s Bible studies, and was the executive director for a faith based philanthropic organization in Highlands County, Florida. So far, God has enabled them to: 1) raise up a core group of about 30 people, 2) establish a weekly prayer meeting with the core group (Zoom), 3) start two bi-monthly discipleship groups and one Bible study (Zoom), 4) raise - ners. Please join us in praying for the Smiths and this new mission.
preached at the Florida Presbytery meeting and his transfer of credentials from the OPC to the ARP was approved. So far, God has enabled them to: 1) raise up a core group of 17 adults, and 2) start meeting with the core group bi-monthly for Bible study, prayer, and vision casting (Zoom). Faith ARPC (Oxford, FL) has agreed to support. Another existing ARPC is prayerfully considering the same. We thank the Lord for his provision and pray that he will bless this new mission.
In addition to these new missions, Florida Presbytery is engaging in working to
restart one of our oldest churches so as to revitalize our presence in the community. Florida is the only presbytery to apply for and receive the Presbytery Assistance
Grant. The purpose of the grant is to reimburse expenses incurred (up to $15,000) by a presbytery for an advisor to assist church extension committees to recruit, assess, and train church planters. During February 2021, Florida Presbytery con- tracted with Tom Hawkes to serve as Director of Church Planting. Since then, he has done the following:
1) Established one on one monthly church planter’s coaching sessions via Zoom with Tim Sewell, Scott Smith, Mark Soud, and Justin Westmoreland.
2) Offered coaching to our other church planters. 3) Helped assess the appropriateness of church restarts. 4) Helped draft guidelines for church restarts. 5) Helped recruit and assess potential church planters. 6) Helped draft guidelines for a shorter church planter’s assessment.
We praise the Lord for his work in Florida. ONA is available to assist your presbytery too.
