H
opefully everyone has had a good start to their season. Our summer route
has kicked off in Virginia, and I was contacted by Marlene Joliffe, VP of Operations – Meadow Event Park, and Executive Director – State Fair of Vir- ginia, with an invitation to be a guest speaker at the state headquarters of the Virginia Farm Bureau for a Board of Directors meeting on behalf of the OABA, as well the midway provider for many agricultural fairs throughout Virginia. I knew this would be a great opportunity since the Virginia Farm Bureau helps to support and repre- sent Virginia Farmers and agriculture in much of the same way the OABA supports and represents the outdoor amusement industry. Since a large per- centage of the events that those in the amusement business partner with each year tend to be associated with agri- cultural organizations such as 4H or FFA, I figured that this would be a great chance for two similar organizations to learn more about one another. While speaking with their board of directors, I was able to address many of the issues we face as an industry such as labor, fuel costs and supply chain disruptions, as well as discuss how we generally operate carnival mid- ways in the United States. There was plenty of time for questions and some discussion back and forth. It is always
