Circo Hermanos Caballero by Alex Smith Circus Caballero’s Blue unit, led by Ruben Caballero


Sr. and Luis Caballero, played Panorama City March 24– April 4 2022. This engagement was on the heels of Circo Osorio's performances in the same lot several weeks earlier. Both Caballero units have been going non-stop since mid-2021 as COVID restrictions began to ease, not even stopping to winter in December. The route has been similar to years past, however, the blue unit picked up new dates that were well attended in El Centro, CA and outside of San Diego. The white and purple tent is durable and looks good, considering the years it’s been in service. Their new tent has been raised in specific locations and, while it looks larger, I’m told it is actually smaller. All equipment is first rate and both units feature a lavish concession tent connected to the marquee that features hard wood floors.

his season marks the 20th year since the Caballeros embarked on their first tour


and I think it’s safe to say they've accomplished what they set out to do. Now operating with two units and talk of a third, each with a solid show and respective route predomi- nantly in the California market, it’s a Herculean achievement. Like most shows they’ve endured the closure of Ringling, which sent shockwaves across the industry and, in part, led to many more circus closures. They have also transitioned to an animal- free circus — by necessity, with the implemented laws in California — and finally seem to have survived the COVID pandemic. To top it all off, they provide employment for circus artists, with a long season in a respectable venue. In many ways, that could be their biggest contribu- tion to the circus world's quest to survive the state of the industry in general these recent years, which can be described as “foreboding times."


Through all these changes, how- ever, that which is most evident is
