for me has been to focus on controlling the controllables—that is, building upon what I can control and finding ways to manage and influence the things I cannot.
IRU: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in their career? Clouse: Treat leadership as an impera- tive skill, even at a higher degree than any technical skill or capability your job may demand. Make your development as a leader a priority – it is the great differen- tiator in every endeavor. Tere are a lot of smart, capable people in the world, however leadership is what enables you to separate from the pack. Setting a clear, compelling vision and direction, assembling the people, capabilities and resources to succeed, then inspiring and motivating others to deliver is a timeless formula for success.
IRU: How do you balance the competing demands of your personal and profes- sional life? Clouse: Establish work/life principles based on your own values, realize you’re not perfect but don’t make excuses to compromise on the things that matter most. I want to be remembered as a great husband, father, and friend ahead of a great CEO. Tat makes it clear how I try to prioritize my time. I start with what is most important, like attending my sons’ football games, a dinner, a birthday or a graduation, then structure my work plan around those events. It requires more planning and discipline, but it is possible. I am prouder of the fact that I never missed my kids’ football games than any honor I’ve earned in business.
IRU: What aspect of investor relations do you find most valuable? Clouse: IR helps protect and enhance our reputation and valuation. Our Chief Investor Relations Officer, Rebecca Gardy, ensures

that all external communication to investors, analysts and financial media is accurate and consistent, and that the company’s messages are aligned with our strategic objectives.
IRU: How can IR add the most value to your leadership team? Clouse: By providing critical market intel- ligence based on frequent engagement with current and potential investors, and monitor- ing competitor activity and market trends, our IR team provides the leadership team with up-to-date information and analysis we can use to make informed decisions about Campbell’s strategic direction.
IRU: What do you think are the key ingre- dients to a compelling investor narrative? Clouse: Clarity, transparency, consistency. Providing investors with a clear, concise message that provides the relevant informa- tion needed to make an informed decision
is critical. Equally important is that the messaging is consistent across all channels and stakeholders—employees, customers, suppliers, and the board.
IRU: What’s the one thing you take on every business trip? Clouse: My iPad; I love movies and music. I’m also known to carry what my friends and family jokingly refer to as my mobile CVS bag. Traveling the world has prepared me to be ready for anything—from pharmacy to food.
IRU: If you weren’t CEO, what would you be doing? Clouse: I love sports and leadership—so I would have pursued a career in coaching.
IRU: Where is your happy place? Clouse: Warm weather and on the water! IR
