BOARD SPOTLIGHT: DR. BONNIE BARR

Dr. Bonnie Barr, Immediate Past President, KVMA Tell us about your experience as President of the KVMA? It has been an honor to be President of the KVMA and it has been an amazing experience. I really enjoy interacting with board members and the membership. I appreciate the com- mitment and hard-work that each board member has given to the organization. Being involved with the many committees has opened my eyes to different aspects of organized veterinary medicine, especially the legislative process. Personally the ex- perience has given me the opportunity to make new friends and to grow and progress as a leader.

What are some of the challenges you faced? Te pandem- ic was the biggest challenge faced and being able to provide KVMA members with resources and tools so that they could continue to provide services. Another challenge faced was what to do regarding the 2020 annual conference (MAVC). Should the conference be virtual or cancelled? Lastly, on a funny note, a personal chal- lenge was running the board meetings via ZOOM. My technical skills are poor so initially this was a struggle. Working with the board and Debra, these challenges were overcome, although at times I still struggle with the ZOOM meetings.

What do you look back on that makes you smile when you think of your involvement with the KVMA? One big accomplishment for the ENTIRE Kentucky Veterinary com- munity that REALLY makes me smile is the passage of Senate Bill 21. With the passage of this bill Kentucky Veterinarians can report, in good faith, suspected animal abuse of patients under their care without a waiver or court order. A lot of individuals including veterinarians, legislators, lobbyists and agriculture industry leaders worked very hard to make this happen.

What are some of the issues facing the veterinary profession right now? Student debt, diversity and providing veterinary services to underserved areas. I also think veterinarians still struggle with work-life balance and wellness.

Why should more veterinarians and others in the veterinary profession consider be- coming KVMA members? Being a member of KVMA provides an avenue to connect and network with others in the veterinary profession on a state and local level. Members are dedicated to working together to improve the veterinary profession in Kentucky. For young veterinarians KVMA provides resources regarding mentorship and leadership, such as Power of Ten program.
