Following APSP/ANSI Standards Matters!

While it is essential that all facilities and equipment comply with Federal and State and local laws, regulations and codes, these often fail to address all the critical safety, design and construction issues involved with a pool, spa or hot tub. Complying with the ANSI/APSP voluntary industry standards provides an important additional layer of protection for your customers, their family and guests, and for your company as well. Below are just a few of the key reasons why compliance with the ANSI/APSP Standards and the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) is so critical for your business:

It’s State of the Art. Safety First. Protect Yourself in Court. 1

ANSI/APSP Standards are developed by industry experts and reviewed and approved by industry and safety experts as well as public health officials under the rigorous ANSI process. They are also continually updated to represent the latest technologies and learning.

ANSI/APSP Standards address all the critical safety issues pertaining to design and construction including barriers, entrapment prevention, exits, entries, circulation and sanitization. Compliance provides maximum protection for your customers, their family and guests.

In the event an injury does occur in a pool or spa you installed, compliance with these standards will often be your best defense in court or in arbitration or mediation. Even where the standards have not been adopted into law, you can show that you are following the industry’s best practices. If you don’t comply, these Standards can be used against you, increasing the risk that you may be found guilty. Most pool related injury lawsuits these days are targeted against builders/dealers because they failed to comply with the ANSI/APSP Standards.

Protection by Warranty. 4 It saves energy and money. It sells.

Compliance with The Standards, as well as component manufacturer instructions (which typically follow the Standards) may also impair your ability to defend a warranty claim by your customer, It may also void the manufacturer’s warranty, leaving the builder/dealer on the hook and without recourse. It may also void any indemnity protection or additional insurance provided by the manufacturer.

Pools built in compliance with the latest ANSI/APSP-15 Energy Efficiency Standard and the ANSI/APSP-13 Water Conservation Standard are more efficient, resulting in significant savings for your customer over the life of the pool.

Customers do their homework, scouring the internet for information on pool safety, efficiency and operating costs. A commitment to comply with the ANSI/ APSP Standards is an excellent way to elevate your company above your competition as a consummate pool and spa professional and gain the trust and respect of the homeowner.
