The future is in good hands Irrigation Today recently asked a few of the recipients of the 2018 Irrigation Foundation s hol

“Growing up in the agricultural industry, I was exposed to different irrigation methods, but I never really knew the purpose behind these systems. My education has answered these questions and at the same time has increased my interest in irrigation. My f

manage or design on-farm irrigation systems for a large company.” DEREK UEMURA | CAL POLY, SAN LUIS OBISPO
“With the knowledge that I acquired in hydraulics and water management systems design, I have a deeper understanding of water usage. My focus on water expanded while doing research in water quality in the Everglades. When I was asked to design a central pivot irrigation system for my intro to design analysis class, I realized how vital the use of water is to irrigation. In the future, I plan on working with others to design an efficient irrigation system for my family’s
farm in Haiti. I also plan on educating them with best management practices.” JENIVA ST. PHAR | FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY
“I am taking several irrigation classes during my watershed management degree. e two go hand in hand with each other, especially in the eastern Washington area. It interests me because it is a vital skill to have when working with conservation districts from around the state. In the future, I plan to use the skills acquired during my education to continue to work for local producers.”
ADRIEN ROSAMOND | WALLA WALLA COMMUNITY COLLEGE
“I am currently a bioresource and agricultural engineering undergrad at CalPoly, San Luis Obispo. While our major has pillars in mechanical design, automation and irrigation, I decided to focus on water because water is the one resource for which there are no alternatives. is concept of water as a precious resource is something that I would like to incorporate in all my future designs, whether that be in district modernization overseas or improving watershed
management here in the United States.” SARAH ATMADJA | CAL POLY, SAN LUIS OBISPO
“My current agricultural irrigation studies have allowed me to reach out to a wider audience and connect with more agriculturists in the interest of public education and outreach. In the future, I may become a teacher or a motivational speaker, a company executive or a resource developer. Regardless, I know that I will work in the interest of sustainable agriculture and
irrigation systems.” CLAIRE LAURENZ | MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
