Precision irrigation

Making precision

irrigation adoptable & pofitable

By Kylen Hunt

Is it possible to manage water at a precise level? Yes, by maintaining the right perspective.

P

recision irrigation is the precise use of irrigation water to achieve a specific agronomic goal. However, it’s one of the hardest agronomic inputs to manage. It responds differently in different soil types, different soil textures and different topographies. It also reacts differently to humidity, wind pressure, temperature, etc. Based on these never-ending variables, is it even possible for producers to manage water at a precise level? Yes, but we must look at this unique input from a different perspective.

First of all, to successfully adopt precision irrigation technology, we should use a core habit from Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People. Habit number 2 is “Begin with the end in mind.” When implementing precision irrigation, producers need to clearly define their desired outcomes (the end in mind). Is it increased yield, water conservation, improved nutrient efficiency or managing limited water? Or, is it a combination of all with a goal to improve profit margins?
