Family Farm Alliance

Pat Riley (Montana) represented the Family Farm Alliance at a May 9 Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing on America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018.

The AWIA 2018 includes specific provisions that will benefit the Upper Missouri River watershed, as well as rural communities and agricultural water users in other parts of the West. Some of the key provisions of AWIA 2018 include modifications to Fontenelle Reservoir in Wyoming, flood protection on the Snake River, control of invasive species, and evaluation of federal agency capabilities and capacity.

AWIA 2018 authorizes projects that have undergone congressional scrutiny and have completed chief of engineers’ reports from the Army Corps of Engineers. The legislation will repair aging drinking water, wastewater and irrigation systems.

Youth learn about water technology

In an effort to develop the future workforce and encourage youth to pursue a career in agriculture, Western Growers hosted a Junior AgSharks Competition on May 8, 2018, in Reedley, California. More than 60 students from local high schools and colleges heard pitches from startup companies developing technologies to solve agriculture’s most pressing issues, such as water supply and quality. After hearing the pitches, the students “conferred” with a panel of venture capitalists and farmers to choose which startup they felt had the best technology to solve issues plaguing the Central Valley.

By hearing about the latest technologies and interacting with leaders in the agricultural industry and venture capitalist space, students were exposed to the fact that the industry is in need of future leaders who are interested in topics related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The event culminated in a keynote address from Andra Keay of Silicon Valley Robotics, where participants gleaned wisdom about being the future of ag and tech. “You are the robot jockeys of the future,” Keay said to the students. Junior AgSharks was part of Western Growers’ Innovation in the Central Valley event where Western Growers is advancing innovation by bringing agricultural technologies to farmers.
