Weather outlook La Niña returns
Water temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific have trended cooler than normal over the past several months, signifying the return of La Niña. Much like last winter, this La Niña is expected to be a relatively weak event, but it should still impact weather patterns across the globe. The strongest correlation between weather patterns and La Niña is found across Southeast Asia and Australia, where above normal precipitation is typical, but there is also some correlation with weather patterns here in North America. La Niña typically leads to below normal precipitation across the southern tier of the United States during winter and early spring, which can lead to soil moisture deficits across the southern portions of the hard red winter wheat belt, particularly in Texas and Oklahoma. La Niña typically begins to lose its punch by early spring, and early indications are that a move toward El Niño is possible by summer. El Niño typically leads to benign summer weather for crops across the United States, but it is still too early to know for sure that El Niño will develop by this coming summer.
