Irrigation Association honors

2017 award recipients During the 2017 Irrigation Show and Education Conference, four individuals and three projects were honored as recipients of Irrigation Association and Irrigation Foundation awards. Award winners were honored during the general session on Nov. 9.

National Water & Energy Conservation Award

USDA-NIFA Multistate Project W-3128: “Scaling Microirrigation Technologies to Address the Global Water Challenge”

This project consisted of work conducted by research and extension professionals and federal labs (along with industry representatives) and focused on a wide range of interlocking water-related issues. The group worked to raise awareness among research directors and U.S. Department of Agriculture professionals of the advances in and importance of irrigation technology/application as it influences so many different areas of our economy and the ability to sustainably manage our water resources. (See p. 34 – 35 for in-depth information about this project from the participants.)

Industry Achievement Award Clarence Prestwich, PE, CAIS, CID

Throughout his 34-year career as an irrigation engineer with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, Prestwich has left an indelible mark on the industry by assisting landowners in design, installation and management of irrigation systems and developing many of the irrigation technology manuals still in use today. (See p. 32 for more information about Prestwich and his contributions to the irrigation industry.)

Vanguard Award

Agriculture | Close-Spaced LEPA Installations: Saving Water & Energy & Increasing Yields

This project includes a collaboration of manufacturers, irrigation dealers and growers working to combine the close-spacing LEPA technology developed in the 1980s with today’s product innovations to alter irrigation application to achieve efficiencies typically exceeding 95 percent. (Watch the April issue of Irrigation Today for detailed information about this project.)

Turf-Landscape | Revitalization of the National Mall

This project spanned a total of seven years of planning and construction completed by a large group of contributing companies. The process included the installation of a new water-efficient irrigation system for the eight center tree panels and edge irrigation for the bordering tree panels on both sides of the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Innovator Award Mike Baron & Robert Starr

Baron and Starr, both of The Toro Company, are the founders and cohosts of The Water Zone, a pioneering weekly radio show developed to bring the message of responsible water use to the masses.
