SIR believes in diversity and inclusion

On June 3, SIR President Michael D. Dake, MD, FSIR, and Diversity and Inclusiveness Advisory Group Chair Paul J. Rochon, MD, FSIR, issued a statement on supporting diversity and combating racial inequality in America. Below is an edited excerpt:

SIR is committed to antiracist efforts, policies and programs that aim to increase the numbers of underrepresented minorities and women within our specialty, values a culture of inclusion in which all members of the IR community are accepted, respected and embraced, and strongly supports the need to reduce and eliminate health disparities that affect our Black patients and other patients of color.

Congratulations GEMS recipients

SIR and SIR Foundation promote a culture of inclusion in the belief that different perspectives strengthen the specialty. The Grants for Education of Medical Students (GEMS) Program, which provides scholarships to fund visiting clerkships/ rotations in IR, is open to students who are seeking to be the first generation of physicians in their families and identify as being from racial or ethnic groups that are underrepresented in the medical field, female, or LGBTQ, as well as students who come from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, many institutions have cancelled visiting clerkship rotations for 2020. SIR Foundation will implement a 6-week virtual curriculum for recipients.

Congratulations to cycle 2 GEMS recipients: • Adlai Grayson, Howard University College of Medicine • Krichelle White, University of Arizona College of Medicine, Phoenix • Justin Hendrix, Indiana University School of Medicine

Applications for cycle 3 close Aug. 1. For more information and how to apply, visit apply.sirfoundation.org.

IRQ’s commitment

IR Quarterly regularly highlights SIR and SIR Foundation diversity and inclusion initiatives, amplifying the voices of IRs with diverse backgrounds, through “The commitment,” which focuses on aspects of D&I within SIR and IR, and “Humans of IR,” a project exploring the origins and life decisions that led physicians of all ages, races, genders and incomes to pursue a career in IR. We thank Hirschel McGinnis, MD, for coordinating this column.
