SIR invites you to participate in an E&M

Coding Call to Action As a result of E&M coding provisions included in the FY2020 Physician Payment Rule, interventional radiology is slated for a 5% to 8% cut in Medicare payments. These cuts will go into effect Jan. 1, 2021, unless Congress intervenes.

As our nation’s health care system navigates the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 crisis, it is critical for lawmakers to take steps to ensure that physician practices are not penalized when they can least afford it.

SIR is organizing a grassroots effort, in coordination with many other medical societies, asking Congress to prevent or delay IR Medicare payment cuts resulting from the updated E&M coding changes. Because of budget neutrality rules, some specialties will be cut so that others can have a rate increase. We are asking all SIR members to please reach out to your lawmakers and ask them to prevent pending Medicare cuts by waiving budget neutrality for the E&M code proposal for 2021.

To contact your representatives, visit bit.ly/2Y6lpLY. The system will automatically send an email to your representative based on a provided sample letter. Please also consider writing a personal note that shows how your practice has been affected by the COVID pandemic and cannot afford another hit like this one. I also encourage everyone to make a phone call to your representatives and let them know that you would like them to waive budget neutrality for the E&M code proposal for 2021.

impact factor The Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology impact factor—one measure of a publication’s rank or value based on a journal citation references—has just been released by the Journal Citation Reports, published by Clarivate Analytics. The new impact factor, the highest in JVIR’s history, made a significant 7% jump compared with the previous year’s impact factor, growing from 2.828 to 3.037. This growth places JVIR in a distinct class of peer journals, outdistancing all other IR specialty journals. This continuing growth trajectory makes JVIR the commanding voice of IR science and paves the way for the publication of highest-level IR research on its pages.

Coming in the fall 2020 IRQ: JVIR Editor- in-chief Ziv J Haskal, MD, FSIR, talks with us about his historic 10-year term, trends in IR research and more
