EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S TURF TPI in Texas, 2017
Casey Reynolds, PhD
Yes, if you read the above title of this edition of my Executive Director’s Turf column, you did in fact read the year correctly. It’s 2017. It’s not your eyes playing tricks on you, and as someone who just got glasses recently, I can make that joke…
As I was preparing for this edition of Turf News and thinking through all of the things about TPI 2025 in San Antonio, my mind couldn’t help but go back to 2017 when I was a young-ish faculty member at Texas A&M University who had not yet attended my first TPI event.
Linda Bradley, from Turf Mountain Sod, called me out of the blue to say her husband David was going to drop a hat off to me in College Station, not too far up the road from the TPI 2017 Conference in Houston.
Little did I know it was a bedazzled hat with the state of Texas on it, but upon seeing it I knew why she and David wanted me to have it. Tey had just bought it at Te Lawn Institute (TLI) auction and needed a sucker to pawn it off on I guess… I mean what self-respecting Texan, or anyone for that matter, is really going to wear a blue and green bedazzled Cowboy hat? LOL...
Fast-forward eight years later to 2025, and just to be fair, after having been with TPI for seven years now I certainly understand the type of love, appreciation, and passion for this association that would drive a person to buy such an item in a TLI auction—and I wear it with pride!
Each time we all gather together as an association I see the relationships that our members have built with each other, and it’s inspiring.
I’m also thankful to say that I’ve built many myself that I know will last a lifetime. It’s relationships that matter, it’s fun to see them prosper at TPI, and it’s what keeps us coming back. Tat’s true for me personally, and I’m sure for many of you as well.
Having said that, I think that’s a good place to stop for this edition. I mean, after all, I need to keep this short enough to leave room for everyone to truly appreciate the bedazzled cowboy hat picture!
Cheers,
