ASSESSING A COMPANY SAFETY MANUAL A

t least once a year I set aside some time for reviewing our overall policies and making note of any items that may need to be revised. This year’s focus was our corporate safety manu- al.
Often time, a company is advised to have a cus- tom safety manual to protect them from OSHA violations. While that holds true, customizing a safety manual is a wise practice for other reasons. A good exercise while reviewing any policy is to measure the intent and content of your manual against the current goals, history and safety cul- ture of your company. A safety manual supports and further enhances an existing company team member handbook. Establishing solid and inclusive team member policies emphasizing safety has other benefits besides protecting your workforce’s wellness
and job satisfaction. Take note on what may have been needed the previous year may not apply to the current year. Such items will need to be removed from a manual to eliminate unneces- sary liabilities. Conversely if new items are being implemented they must be added or amended to the new safety manual.
HOW DOES A CUSTOMIZED MANUAL HELP MAINTAIN A CULTURE OF SAFETY? Start off with a commitment to safety by the ownership. This initial commitment to safety will consist of a statement of the company’s plan for safety. This statement should be signed by the owner or legal representative of the corpora- tion. The owner will name a contact person that is assigned to make sure the company’s com-
