EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Jeff Curwen, CAE WSCA Executive Director
Regular turnover of leadership is just part and parcel of how nonprofit organizations are managed. By design, board members are supposed to rotate in and out in order to ensure members have responsive and representative leaders guiding the organization. However, the value of long-serving volunteers with
deep institutional knowledge and established relationships with key stakeholders cannot be underestimated. Striking a balance between the two can be difficult and requires a great deal of introspection, trust in your successors, and careful timing. But with competing time commitments and the knowledge that they must eventually pass the torch, two of our most tenured board members have chosen to step down in October. Considering that both were on the Board long before I came to the WSCA nearly ten years ago, and that they’ve both been incredible resources for me in learning the history and culture of chiropractic, I wanted to use this ED message to recognize them both.
Former WSCA president and outgoing District 9 Representative, Dr. Randy Baze, has been with the association since its inception
and has consistently kept it focused on the balance of art, science, and philosophy in chiropractic. Indeed, many of you attend his Philosophy Forum meetings. He has been integral in the founding of Washington Chiropractic College, and as it draws nearer to opening, it will certainly demand more of his time.
Former IICAC member and outgoing District 10 Representative, Dr. Ron Wilcox, has been one of the most active volunteers I’ve had the pleasure of working with. In addition to being my go-to resource for all things work comp, he’s never said no when the association has called upon him. He is also the District 5 Representative to Clinical Compass and is positioned to soon become the chairperson of that chiropractic thinktank. As he advances there, he will also see more demands on him.
I am very grateful to both of these highly-respected DCs for their commitment to the profession, its patients, and its future; and I’m glad to see their talents being applied to other ventures that continue to build and strengthen chiropractic. Thank you, Drs. Baze and Wilcox, for your years of service.
The new District 9
and District 10 Representatives will each have big shoes to fill, and I look forward to helping them continue your legacies of Helping Chiropractors Help Patients.
