Kimberly Palmer-Yee, DC WSCA Immediate Past President

The Washington State Chiropractic Association was incorporated in 1990. The initial board of directors of the corporation had 13 members comprised of the three executive committees of the three state organizations who came together and founded the WSCA. Elections were held in 1991 and commenced January 1, 1992 wherein the number of directors was reduced to nine, one representative from each Congressional District. After the results of the 2000 United States Census, Washington gained another Congressional District, and the WSCA added one more representative. This change took effect in 2002.

The Board consists of a President, Vice President (styled as President-Elect), Immediate Past President, one Director from each of the state’s Congressional Districts, one Legislative Director, and the Executive Director. The President designates one Director to serve as Secretary and one to serve as Treasurer. Any board member may fill the position of Treasurer, and any board member except for the president may fill the position of Secretary. Officers of the Board are the President, President-Elect, Immediate Past President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

In addition to the Board of Directors, we are supported by our Executive Director Jeff Curwen, Executive of Legislation and Policy, Lori Grassi, Membership Director, Shaka Forest, and our Finance Manager, Kathy Leehan. This article will give you an introduction to each of these individuals.

Jeff Curwen is the WSCA’s Executive Director. Jeff has been working in associations and nonprofits for 19 years. After law school he served as the director of the Arizona Constable Ethics, Standards and Training Board, the education director for the Arizona Association of Counties, and later the Arizona Osteopathic Medical

Association. After moving back to Washington, he became the executive director of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties - Washington Chapter and opened his own

consulting firm where he specialized in grant writing. When Jeff isn’t steering the association, he volunteers with a number of organizations dealing with animal welfare. Jeff brings leadership, great communication skills and compassion. He has encouraged our association to work collaboratively with one another and we are stronger today because of it. When he isn’t spending time with his wife, cat Oliver, or dog, Strasse, Jeff is reading sci-fi novels. He reads two to three each week and is a self-described sci-fi nerd. When he was working on his master’s degree in applied ethics, his thesis was titled Dystopia: A Comparative Study of Ethics in Science Fiction Professions and their Real-World Counterparts. When I asked Jeff what he liked most about working with the association, he said “I truly believe that I am making my community better by facilitating synergy among chiropractors.” He likes that his work is the embodiment of the WSCA mission— helping chiropractors help patients.

Lori Grassi joined the WSCA in 2001. She was initially hired as Lobbyist and Membership Director and in 2003 she was promoted to the position of Executive Director while continuing her lobbying duties. After 15 years of maintaining this dual position, Jeff Curwen was hired

and within a few years he transitioned to the Executive Director position which allowed Lori to focus on Legislation and Policy. Lori started her career in directory assistance for telephone operations and quickly became involved
