a new country (Novara et al., 2021). While a substantial amount of literature focuses on intergenerational trauma, much less focuses on the impacts of intergenerational resilience within immigrant and refugee communities (Denov et al., 2019). Intergenerational resilience describes the “process of transmitting resilience across generations” (Denov et al., 2019, p. 25). Examples can include a transfer of community/family wisdom, cultural practices, life lessons, and positive role modeling. Intergenerational resilience highlights the importance of play therapists ensuring that treatment plans include the strengthening of resilience factors when working with immigrant clients. For example, is the family connected to community resources? Do they have practices that enhance the intergenerational transition of cultural values? Are children exposed to role models representing their culture of origin?
Play therapists must be mindful that even though communities to ‘bounce back.’ A community leader who works with marginalized communities once told us, “I do believe that all human beings have the ability to recover. Now, when they keep hitting us in the same bruise, we no longer heal so easily.”
Immigrant children and families come from diverse backgrounds and their reasons for immigrating vary. Understanding each child and provide culturally inclusive services that can be healing, meaningful, and caring to immigrant communities. Although authors provide guidance and considerations when working with this population, beyond this article.
