LOSS OF FIVE YARDS: Enforcing Rules in Community Associations
American football dominates our cultural consciousness from the end of summer through the Big Game. Football is a game of strength, strategy, will, and passion. It is also a game of rules. For example, the rules of football prohibit “illegal motion.” In football, players on the offensive side are prohibited from moving toward the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped. Illegal motion also occurs when an offensive player moves to a new position on the line and fails to reset (i.e., become stationary) before the ball is snapped. When there is illegal motion in violation of the rule, the referee enforces the rule, and the team which committed the infraction loses five yards. Rules are an important part of football because they promote fairness and safety.
