within each organization. Every owner has an opportunity to participate in building a positive sense of community no matter how much preparation, skill, time or effort is involved. Willingness to share skills, talents, interests, suggestions, and ideas is always welcome whenever the need for such arises. And, there is almost always such a need!
Can owners participate in the development of a strong sense of community without formal service per a structured opportunity? Of course! Every owner has the opportunity to participate as a friendly or helpful neighbor. A smile and cheerful “hello” to a neighbor met in the hallway or in the neighborhood contributes to a positive sense of community, belonging, and well- being. Offers of helpfulness to neighbors experiencing temporary challenges creates a positive spirit of community as well as a level of personal satisfaction and social bond. Groups of neighbors may share similar concerns or complaints, and their agreement on how to communicate these issues and ideas can serve as effective participation in developing a voice for community improvement.
Owners can participate within their communities very effectively by choosing to attend the official annual membership meeting scheduled for the election of board members to fill available or renewal seats on the board. In preparation for this important vote, owners should become informed about the candidates seeking election and attend any sessions provided by the candidates who may explain their reasons for wanting to serve on the board. Owners who are not able to attend this annual meeting in person should complete the available proxy to allow another trusted owner or personal family member or friend to vote on the owner’s behalf. Voting to elect board members who will represent the association and make decisions until term expiration is one of the most important participatory opportunities available to each and every owner.
One thing that is absolutely essential for every owner who would participate at the association’s Round Table, is devoted attendance to the meetings of the board of directors. Although the owners may not generally participate during board members’ deliberations before each vote, the participating owners must take note of
each
board member’s position and pleadings. The manner and nature of how each member reacts to others, with or without respect, is significant. Unless owners actually attend board meetings to observe the actions and positions of the members, then having open meetings (open to all owners) becomes moot. Also, if the open forum for attending owners is held before or after the business portion of the meeting, owners have opportunity to participate by sharing any concerns or criticisms.
Occasionally the board member selected as the secretary of the association would greatly appreciate the help from someone experienced in taking accurate notes as a recording secretary. This volunteer position as recording secretary would require good writing skills and reliability to attend the meetings. Such position would enable the actual board secretary to participate actively in board discussions without the burden of having to take notes at the same time. Of course, this volunteer opportunity would require a great deal of dedicated time and participation.
Owners within the community association who have the desire and time to serve in the most demanding opportunity for participation may wish to run for the board of directors themselves. Service as a board member can be very demanding. It involves a time commitment to attend all meetings, and to prepare for each meeting by reading and evaluating all materials received
